OVERVIEW
Woy Woy Peninsula Little Athletics caters for children aged between 5 and 17 years of age, of all abilities. Competition is held on Friday night from October to March at McEvoy Oval Umina from 6pm.
We rely on volunteers to run, and all parents and guardians are expected to be involved and help out where they can. You must stay and supervise your children when they are participating.
Children are organised into gender based age groups and they participate in between 3 and 6 events per night depending on their age. A parent age manager is needed for each group. Parents/carers can also share this role between them. Many events also need parents/carers to help measure or time as well.
We are all about having a go, and children doing their best, emphasising having fun, keeping a positive attitude, participation of everyone, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and making new friends.
No experience is necessary and there are various online training materials available on the NSW Little Athletics website that can give you basic guidance. We encourage a supportive and inclusive environment, and we have coaches and older athletes on hand to give basic instruction on how to do events. We can organise additional training for children who are keen to do a bit extra or qualify for higher level competition.
Little Athletics is all about doing something fun with your children and simply encouraging them to have a go, achieve their Personal Best (PB) and improve their performance over the season. Children can track their progress over time as results are entered into an online data base (ResultsHQ).
There are numerous carnivals and competitions held throughout the season so children can participate in extra events if they are interested.

Spikes are not compulsory, but if you choose to wear them, the following rules apply. Athletes in the U9 – U10 age group may not wear spike shoes. Athletes in the U11 – U12 age group may wear spike shoes in events run entirely in lanes, long jump, triple jump, high jump and javelin. Athletes in the U13 – U15 age groups may wear spike shoes in all track events except walks. Spike shoes may also be worn for long jump, triple jump, high jump and javelin.
You can read the full rules in the Standard Rules for Competition of Little Athletics Australia (Rule 143).

Competition Nights
Children are organised into age-based gendered groups that are determined by date of birth.
There is more information about the age groups available on the LANSW website.
Activities are coordinated by an Age Manager (who is a volunteer parent) and follow an age-appropriate rotating program of track and field events that include a mix of the following activities:
- Running including sprinting, middle distance, and hurdles
- Throwing including shot-put, discuss
- Jumping including long jump, high jump, and triple jump
Each week there is a rotation of 3-4 activities per age group so that children have the opportunity to learn the basic level of athletic skill required for each activity and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of them several times over the season.
The weekly competition is usually finished by around 7.30 pm. However, it depends a little on the type of events, the number of children in each age group, the number of volunteers we have, and even the weather conditions on any given competition night. Older children compete in longer-distance events and these take longer to complete. Every effort is made to make our competition nights run as smoothly as possible, and the more support we get, the better it works for everyone.
Updates regarding weather conditions etc on competition nights are shared on our facebook page as soon as decisions are made.
Results
Results from each competition night are uploaded into a database and are available in the results section of this website.
Awards
An encouragement award is given each week by the relevant age manager. Children are also awarded trophies and other prizes based on the weekly results and participation in other events at the end of each season. All children will receive a participation medal for their efforts. We hold a presentation ceremony each year at either our clubhouse or at the venue of one of our sponsors. There are a number of perpetual trophies awarded at these events and you can find out more about them on
Coaching
Our club offers track and field training and coaching on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the competition season for those athletes who are interested in improving their performance for competition. Please click on the training/coaching
Volunteering
We are a non-profit organisation that raises funds through our registration fee and operates through the support of our local community. We are run solely by a team of volunteers who put their heart and soul into making the club a success.
The successful operation of our club relies solely on parents volunteering to assist. All parents are required to volunteer in some capacity every season. There are a variety of activities that you can nominate to do. Little Athletics is a family movement in which the mums, dads, grandparents, and friends of children can do something together. The children compete and parents get involved by assisting on the night. Our club is what we make it and we are all committed to making it good fun.
The following roles need to be filled by our parent volunteers each week, so get active and get involved. You can participate by helping us to set up, becoming an Age Manager, or helping out on canteen or BBQ duty from time to time. If you have a bit more time you could take up a role on the management committee or assist with coaching if you have relevant experience.

All athletes in U12 -U17 age groups are entitled to dual membership with Athletics NSW (ANSW). This provides older athletes with a pathway to join an ANSW club and compete in ANSW events. Previously, Little Athletics’ dual-aged athletes were asked to select a senior club when registering. The athlete’s data was imported into the separate Athletics NSW membership platform and each athlete automatically allocated to an ANSW club as a member.
This season, to simplify the process for Dual-aged Athletes, ANSW will require Dual athletes to individually activate or renew their free ANSW Dual membership via the ANSW membership platform. ANSW will advise Dual athletes regarding this process along with the ANSW Membership Go Live date which will be in September this year.
You can apply an Active Kids Program Voucher to your little athletics registration. The Active Kids program provides two $100 vouchers for parents, guardians and carers of school-enrolled children to use towards sport and active recreation costs each year. From 1 July each year, parents, guardians, and carers can apply for their second $100 Active Kids voucher.

This trophy is awarded to the highest overall point score.

The Committee decides the Award winners after taking into account the recommendations made by the Under 12 Age Managers for their encouragement awards.

The criteria for recipients are Current Year Age Champion, representation at the NSW State Championships, Sportsmanship, Training at Club, representation at various carnivals outside club level.
